About the Expedition

Key Biodiversity Highlights of Munnar

Nestled within the mist-laden folds of Kerala’s Western Ghats, Munnar is a landscape where rolling tea
plantations flow into silver waterfalls, and drifting clouds weave through emerald valleys. Often referred to as
the “Crown Jewel of South India,” Munnar presents an ever-evolving canvas of greens, blues, and golden
light—an inspiring setting for photographers drawn to both beauty and mood.

Munnar National Park is best known as the stronghold of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, which thrives in its
high-altitude grasslands. Other mammals include sambar deer, gaur, wild boar, Indian porcupine, and
occasional sightings of leopards and Asian elephants in adjoining forested areas.

The park supports a rich birdlife, particularly species endemic to the Western Ghats. Notable birds include the Nilgiri Flycatcher, Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Malabar Whistling Thrush, and White-bellied Shortwing, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers.

Munnar’s cool montane climate and high rainfall support diverse amphibian life, including several endemic
frogs of the Western Ghats. Reptiles such as Nilgiri keelback, shieldtail snakes, and forest lizards are also
found, many specially adapted to high-elevation ecosystems.

The park features a distinctive mix of shola forests and rolling grasslands, with rich plant diversity. Rare
orchids, medicinal plants, mosses, and lichens flourish in this mist-covered landscape, contributing to its
ecological uniqueness.

Apart from the Nilgiri Tahr, the park is home to rare species such as the Nilgiri Marten, endemic birds, and
several critically localized amphibians found only in the Western Ghats. Seasonal blooms like Neelakurinji,
which flowers once every 12 years, are a major natural highlight.

The shola–grassland mosaic is the defining habitat of Munnar National Park. These isolated forest patches
nestled within grasslands create microclimates that support exceptional levels of endemism and biodiversity.

Part of the Western Ghats UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park plays a crucial role in conserving
montane ecosystems. Dedicated protection efforts focus on habitat preservation, Nilgiri Tahr population
recovery, and regulation of tourism to minimize ecological impact.

Accordion Content

The park is well accessible from Munnar town and offers designated trails and viewpoints ideal for wildlife,
landscape, and nature photography. Open grasslands, dramatic escarpments, and misty valleys provide
excellent light and scenic backdrops, especially during early mornings.

Munnar’s landscape has long been shaped by indigenous communities and colonial-era tea cultivation. The
region reflects a blend of tribal heritage, plantation history, and conservation efforts, offering visitors
cultural depth alongside natural exploration.
